Mindful eating

Today marks Day 6 in my effort towards "mindful eating". What do I mean by "mindful eating"? Well, for me, I tend to eat sporadically throughout the day without giving much thought to what, when or why I'm eating, sometimes even IF I'm eating. My husband works second shift, so from about noon onwards I'm on my own... nibbling here and there, particularly while watching TV mid-afternoon and then later on in the evenings. So, about a week ago, I decided that enough was enough! From that day onward, I have been consciously thinking about every bite I take. It's not so much about going on a diet, as we all know those don't work long term. It's more about a gradual shift away from processed, fat-laden foods towards more natural foods - more fruit, veggies, whole grains. Whole almonds have become my latest 'munchie food'... eating just four or five give me the crunch factor I crave. Now, for someone who bakes as a livelihood, cutting back on sugar, refined flours and all the good stuff like chocolate and caramel is not going to be an easy task. But the way I see it, EVERYTHING is okay, IN MODERATION, as long as I remember to stay 'mindful'.

Oh, and by the way... six days in... 4 pounds lost! YAY me! :D

What's better than fresh-baked bread?

Well, honestly, I do not know. Perhaps those delicious, warm slices served on lovely milk glass plates, accompanied by strawberry jam and a smooth cup of coffee? That works for me. Delight yourself tomorrow and set a pretty table. It will do wonders for your mood and your soul.

And before you say "But I don't have the money for fancy stuff", let's just stop right there. Take a visit to a local thrift store - you just may be pleasantly surprised at what's available. You know what they say "One man's trash is another man's treasure". Everything pictured here was bought for less than $6.00 and it tugs at my heartstrings in a very positive manner!

C'mon in . . .

Welcome to my little corner of the world. I'll be sharing my love of vintage treasures for the home, as well as glimpses into the wonderful art of baking to delight. Now I'm not talking about high-falutin' pretentiousness that looks good but that nobody actually wants to eat. Nope, we're talking about the kind of baking grandma and great grandma did back in the proverbial 'good old days'. Tried and true recipes, retro recipes, full of nostalgia and old-fashioned good taste. Of course, some will have a more updated feel to them, with the addition of a new twist or technique. I'll also be cooking some 'meals for one' and 'meals for a couple'. I'll throw in a decadent plated dessert here and there as well, just to keep things interesting! Along the way, we'll have some fun setting the table, and creating a cozy atmosphere for family and friends to enjoy. So c'mon in... pour yourself a cup of coffee and let's have some fun making new memories!
